Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has directed schools across Kenya to strictly adhere to the Ministry of Education’s official guidelines on learner reporting and dismissal times.
According to the directive, the official reporting time for learners is 7:15 a.m., while learners are expected to leave school by 3:30 p.m. Schools have been urged to ensure that their daily programmes remain within the stipulated hours.
The directive is aimed at promoting the welfare of learners and ensuring that schools operate within the guidelines set by the Ministry of Education. School administrators are expected to organize teaching, co-curricular activities and other programmes without unnecessarily keeping learners in school beyond the approved hours.
The move also comes amid growing concerns about the workload and amount of time learners spend in school. Adherence to the prescribed timetable is expected to help create a healthier balance between classroom learning, co-curricular activities, rest and time with family.
School heads and teachers have therefore been reminded of their responsibility to implement Ministry guidelines and ensure that learners are not subjected to unnecessarily long school hours.
