Can NG-CDF Build Bridges? Yes — Here’s Proof From Other Kenyan Constituencies
Likuyani – Online debates have intensified over the Mapera–Sikhendu bridge in Sango Ward, with some claiming that bridge construction is solely the responsibility of the County Government and not NG-CDF. But official records show otherwise.
Fact Check: Several National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) offices across Kenya have funded and constructed bridges using CDF money. Here are clear examples:
1. Mumias East Constituency (Kakamega County)
Mumias East NG-CDF issued a formal tender for the Proposed Construction of Foot Bridge at Ebuyofu – Bubole Bridge (Tender No. ME-NGCDF/BRIDGE/02/2020-2021). The tender was open to NCA 6 and above contractors, clearly showing NG-CDF directly funding bridge construction.
2. Narok North Constituency
Narok North MP Ms. Agnes Pareyio recently commissioned a Sh32 million bridge connecting Naisoya and Ololoiito villages using NG-CDF funds. She stated the project was prioritised to help residents transport agricultural produce to the market, especially during rainy seasons.
The MP also revealed that her NG-CDF is constructing three additional bridges in different locations. Previously completed CDF bridges in the area include:
Erusiae-Olekaiki bridge
Murua-Ereset bridge
Entiat-Songoro bridge
These bridges connect wheat, potato, and maize farmers to markets.
The Reality in Likuyani
While other constituencies have used NG-CDF to build bridges, the latest Auditor-General report for Likuyani Constituency (2024/2025) makes no mention of any bridge projects funded in the constituency.
Residents of Sango Ward, particularly around the dangerous Mapera–Sikhendu bridge where a student recently lost her life, continue to demand action.
Questions on the ground:
Why have other constituencies succeeded in building bridges with CDF while Likuyani has not prioritised the Mapera–Sikhendu bridge?
With hundreds of millions received through NG-CDF over the years, why has this life-threatening bridge remained unaddressed?
Should Sango Ward residents continue waiting or push for immediate intervention?
Note: While County Governments have the primary mandate for roads and bridges, NG-CDF regulations allow constituencies to fund small-to-medium infrastructure projects (including footbridges and access bridges) that directly benefit residents — as demonstrated by Mumias East and Narok North.
Likuyani Digest will keep following developments around the Mapera–Sikhendu bridge and other pending infrastructure projects.
