Airtel Under Fire for Cutting Smarta Bundle Data
Airtel Kenya is facing widespread online criticism after revising its Smarta bundles on 18th August 2026 by significantly reducing the amount of data offered while leaving the prices the same.
The most affected packages are the monthly plans. The Ksh 1,000 Smarta bundle has been cut from 45GB to 22GB, a reduction of 51%. The Ksh 1,500 bundle has dropped from 90GB to 32GB, a 64% cut.
Weekly Smarta bundles were also reduced by half. The Ksh 300 plan now offers 3.5GB instead of 7GB, while the Ksh 500 plan has been cut from 14GB to 7GB.
Airtel notified customers via SMS a few days earlier that it would “review Smarta Bundle benefits for Data, Minutes & SMS,” but many subscribers say the scale of the cuts came as a shock.
On social media, users have accused the telco of a stealth price increase, arguing that they are now paying the same amount for far less data. Some have threatened to switch networks, while others have questioned the value of remaining on Airtel.
The changes have sparked strong reactions, with many describing the move as unfair, especially for heavy data users who had come to rely on the previous Smarta allocations.
