County and Aquarech Launch Distribution of 100,000 Fingerlings
The Department of Fisheries, in partnership with Aquarech, has officially launched the distribution of 100,000 fingerlings from Kwhisero Fish Hatchery to fish farmers across Kakamega County.
Approximately 80 farmers each received 1,200 fingerlings under the initiative. The programme aims to support new fish farmers, help existing ones increase their stocks, boost incomes, and strengthen aquaculture in the county. It aligns with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s Food Security and Wealth Creation agenda.
Speaking during the launch, Chief Officer for Livestock and Fisheries Mr Oscar Odunga reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to revitalising the hatchery, which had fallen into disrepair, to ensure a reliable supply of fingerlings. He noted that extension officers would visit the beneficiaries to provide technical support and guidance.
Dr Joseph Oketch, Co-founder and Director of Operations at Aquarech, acknowledged the partnership and thanked the county leadership for creating an enabling environment for fingerling production at Kwhisero Fish Hatchery.
The initiative marks a renewed commitment to sustainable aquaculture development, improved livelihoods for fish farmers, and enhanced food security across the county.
