Ruto: Uhuru Is Sponsoring Opposition Against Me
President William Ruto on Thursday, 13 August 2026, accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of sponsoring opposition figures to challenge his re-election.
Speaking in Eldoret, Ruto claimed that Uhuru had failed to deliver on key promises such as Affordable Housing, Universal Health Coverage and education during his time in office, and had now resorted to funding proxies against him.
“Mkipima wale watu, ule sponsor wao, alishindwa na maneno ya Affordable Housing? Alishindwa na mambo ya Universal Health Coverage? Alishindwa na maneno ya kusomesha watoto wetu? Sasa ameenda kupanga vibaraka wake, anatuma hapa watu kuja kushindana na mimi. Hawa watu nitawaosha asubuhi na mapema,” Ruto said.
He added that the opposition leaders being sponsored had no clear plan, agenda, policies or vision.
The remarks come amid rising political temperatures ahead of 2027, with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement emerging as vocal critics of the government. Sifuna has previously denied receiving financial support from Uhuru, saying the former President only encourages young people to take up leadership.
Ruto’s comments also draw a parallel to the 2022 election, when Uhuru (then sitting President) supported Raila Odinga against him.
