Sifuna’s Camp Secures Temporary Win in Party Name Battle
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has issued preliminary orders allowing the Linda Mwananchi faction led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to reserve the name “The Mwananchi Party”.
The orders, issued on Tuesday 25th August 2026 during a virtual hearing, also barred the Registrar of Political Parties from processing or registering the name “Linda Mwananchi” or any similar variation for any other person or group until the appeal is fully determined.
At the same time, the Tribunal allowed the Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA) — the other group that had moved for the name — to continue with its own reservation and registration process.
Both sides had claimed they were entitled to the “Linda” identity. The Tribunal’s temporary solution allows Sifuna’s team to protect the “Mwananchi Party” brand while the other group proceeds with “LINDA”.
The matter is scheduled to return before the Tribunal on 14th September 2026.
This development comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the Linda Mwananchi movement seeking a formal party vehicle.
