Nairobi Wins Historic Bid to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships
Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time the prestigious global event will be held in Africa.
The decision was announced on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, during the World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest. Nairobi beat competing bids from London and Rome, while Munich was awarded the 2031 championships.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described Nairobi’s bid as “compelling and emotional.”
“Taking the World Athletics Championships to Africa for the first time will be historic. Kenya is one of the great athletics nations. The sport is woven into the fabric of the country,” Coe said.
The championships will be staged at Kasarani Stadium, which is currently undergoing major renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kenya had previously bid unsuccessfully for the 2025 edition (won by Tokyo) but returned with a stronger proposal backed by government support, financial guarantees, and proven experience in hosting major athletics events, including the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the World Under-20 Championships in 2021.
The 2029 event is expected to bring significant global attention, tourism, and economic benefits to Kenya.
