Government Activates National Contingency Plan for Expected El Niño Rains
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued a strong warning of above-normal rainfall across most parts of Kenya during the October–December (OND) season due to El Niño.
According to the press release dated 1st September 2026, the probability of El Niño in Kenya is forecasted to be above 90%, with potentially strong impacts. Anticipated effects include flooding, drowning, injuries and fatalities, displacement of communities, disease outbreaks, damage to roads and infrastructure, and losses to crops and livestock.
Western/Nyanza and North Eastern regions are expected to experience an early onset of the rains.
The government has activated a National Contingency Plan with seven key measures to strengthen preparedness:
Hotspot mapping of flood-prone and vulnerable areas
Unclogging and desilting of drainage systems and culverts
Awareness and evacuation planning for people living in high-risk and riparian areas
Inspection of bridges, roads and critical utilities
Strengthening community-level early warning systems through chiefs and Nyumba Kumi
Pre-positioning of emergency relief items and medical supplies
Rapid response teams placed on standby for search, rescue and evacuation
The government has urged residents living along river banks, low-lying areas and other high-risk zones to remain vigilant, heed evacuation advisories, and report blocked drainages or rising water levels to authorities.
Questions on the ground:
How prepared is Kakamega County and Likuyani Sub-County for the expected heavy rains?
Have local drainage systems and known flood hotspots been cleared?
Are residents in low-lying areas of Matunda, Nzoia and Kongoni being sensitised?
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
