Deductions Hurting the Pocket: Gachagua Demands Housing Levy Freeze as Leaders Clash
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged the national government to immediately suspend the Affordable Housing Levy, revise Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax bands, and overhaul the current petroleum pricing framework to cushion struggling Kenyans.
Speaking from the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters, Gachagua argued that aggressive statutory deductions have eroded net incomes, leaving ordinary households struggling to meet basic daily expenses.
The demands have drawn swift political resistance. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah challenged Gachagua to account for his two-year record in the current administration before criticizing economic policy. Simultaneously, Minority Leader Junet Mohamed cautioned the public to focus on verified economic facts rather than early political posturing ahead of 2027.
Question on the ground:
How will ordinary workers balance rising taxation against stagnant earnings in the current economy?
Likuyani Digest will keep tracking the numbers, the tax burden, and the real impact on the ground.
